Kearns, UT
Kearns is a city in Salt Lake County, just west of Redwood Road. It incorporates roughly 5 square miles, all of which is land.
The U.S. Air Force wanted an isolated place to build a safe training base during World War II. Far from any attacks by the Japanese, but still on the main rail routes to the Pacific Coast. The War Department purchased roughly 5,000 acres of land where Kearns now lies. It opened in 1942 and became known as Camp Kearns. Camp Kearns had 40,000 residents within one year and was Utah’s third largest city.
In 1946 Camp Kearns was closed as an active base. In 1948 the buildings and materials were auctioned off. A few of the homes constructed in Kearns were built from materials left over from the old base buildings. Although the camp was closed, there remained drinking water and sewer treatment plant. This made it possible for people to move to Kearns. There they lived among some of the first large subdivisions built west of Salt Lake City in the ’50s.
Kearns is home to the Utah Olympic Oval. It was the venue for long-track speed skating events in the 2002 Winter Olympics. With the high altitude and thin air, along with amazing architecture, it remains the fastest ice surface in the world.
